New for Old

Updated: Apr 1, 2021

Founded in 1539 The Crypt School in Gloucester is one of the oldest schools in the country. When they needed new courts they turned to Cheltenham based Grimshaw Group, the UK's oldest established specialist tennis court constructor.

The project was to engineer and construct 4 new courts along with associated car parking. An unusual condition of the planning permission required the storm water from the new courts to be fully attenuated with a restricted flow rate to discharge to a storm sewer. Grimshaw Group used the expertise of its Civil Engineering Division to adapt the company's ultra-rapid draining porous sports base system, to create the required attenuation and submitt design calculations to satisfy the local authority. The Grimshaw Base System has been developed over the past 70+ years and initially started when the company pioneered the use of crushed rock in courts when other established contractors were using power station clinker.

It is estimated that adopting Grimshaws engineering solution saved in excess of £30k in comparison with conventional attenuation systems. With a combination of decades of in-house knowledge, management by qualified engineers and a very highly skilled workforce Grimshaw Group can provide their clients with excellent service solutions.
